Personal Finance Classes Attend Financial Reality Fair Students from the Personal Finance classes faced a day in the "real world" recently when they visited the Financial Reality Fair held in the large group room. After selecting their profession, students were given a budget worksheet with their monthly take home pay, a student loan, if applicable, a credit card payment and a list of tables they needed to visit. Eash student was required to purchase a car, secure housing, utilities and furniture, in addition to food, clothing, cell phone, insurance, entertainment, and savings. They also had the option to visit five additional tables if they wanted a pet, a vacation package, hair cuts or manicures, gym membership or to make charitable donations.
As in life, sometimes you get handed unexpected situations, and so each student had to spin the Wheel of Reality where they received something good, such as: a tax refund, an inheritance, birthday money, a second job, a job promotion, or mandatory overtime. Then there were those who were not as fortunate. Their spin actually cost them money - new tires, a friend's wedding, an insurance deductible, a medical expense, a cell phone upgrade, or a computer crash.
After each purchase and loan payment was deducted from their monthly income, they sat down with a financial counselor to discuss their budget. Some students had money left at the end of the month while others needed to return a vehicle that was out of their price range or move back home with mom and dad. Still others needed to find a second job or make cuts elsewhere.
The Reality Fair put life in perspective for many of the students in that they had no idea how much it costs to live on their own!
